Description

The seminar will address the key cases before the U.S. Supreme Court during the October Term 2025. The court will recap key opinions from the previous year, discuss any new or continuing trends at the Court, and preview the upcoming Term.

Speakers include Michael P. Abate, Kaplan Johnson Abate & Bird, Gregory Cui, Counsel for the Supreme Court and Appellate Program at the MacArthur Justice Center and Jay Willis, Editor-in-Chief at Balls and Strikes

About our speakers: 
Michael P. Abate: Mike is an experienced litigator who has practiced at all levels of the federal court system, including briefing numerous cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and arguing before eleven different U.S. Courts of Appeals. He began his career at the U.S. Department of Justice, later becoming a partner and chair of the appellate practice group at a large regional law firm in Louisville. Mike focuses on healthcare, media, and appellate litigation, representing Medicare and Medicaid managed care organizations nationwide and media outlets in constitutional and public records cases, as well as handling appeals in both state and federal courts.

Gregory Cui: Counsel for the Supreme Court and Appellate Program at the MacArthur Justice Center. Greg is a former Supreme Court clerk and worked in the Supreme Court practice at Sidley Austin LLP before joining McArthur. He is a graduate of Yale Law School.

Jay Willis: Jay a journalist and formerly a practicing lawyer. He is the Editor-in-Chief at Balls and Strikes, a website that covers the Supreme Court. His writing has previously appeared in The New York TimesThe Washington PostThe AtlanticThe New Republic, and Slate, among other outlets. Jay previously practiced at large firms in Washington, D.C. and Seattle. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School.

Mike is an experienced litigator who has practiced at all levels of the federal court system. Mike began his career in the U.S. Department of Justice handling the United States’ most sensitive constitutional, statutory, and administrative law cases. After nearly eight years at DOJ, he joined a large regional law firm in Louisville where he became partner and chair of the firm’s appellate practice group. Mike has briefed and argued cases for his clients all across the country, including in eleven different U.S. Courts of Appeals.  He also has briefed numerous cases in the U.S. Supreme Court at both the certiorari and merits stages.
